Picking the right above pool ground liner

As we’re all more cost conscious these days, above ground pools make sense for a number of reasons, the foremost of which is price.

Above ground pools in general cost 10 times less than a traditional in-ground pool. Let’s face it, you can get just as wet in a $3,000 above ground pool as your buddy can in his $30,000 traditional pool. Also, the quality and durability of above ground pools has increased dramatically in the last 20 years, so from a long-term perspective above ground pools are increasingly looking like a good choice for affordable aquatic fun.

One way you can improve the aesthetics and enjoyability of your above ground pool is to make sure you purchase a quality above ground pool liner. Pool liners serve the purpose of insulation. They fit inside the walls of the pool and help to keep water from leaking out, and also provide something a little more friendly to the skin than a concrete or fiberglass wall. Most pool liners are made of vinyl and designed to withstand cold temperatures in the winter, hot temperatures in the summer, wear and tear and the harsh chemicals used to keep swimming pools clean. The average lifespan of a pool liner is about 10 to 15 years.

There are four basic types of pool liners:

Beaded Pool Liners. These are pool liners that are attached to bead receivers or channels at the top of your swimming pool wall. Generally, these are only used with 48″ or 52″ swimming pools.

Overlap Pool Liners: These type of pool liners just hang over each side of the swimming pool. The liner is made a little large so it will overlap a pool that’s 48″ or 52″ tall. A swimming pool coping strip holds your pool in place.

Expandable Pool Liners: These are used for deep-above ground swimming pool liners. These liners can accommodate above ground pools up to 72″ deep.

JHook or UniBeaded Pool Liners: These liners are custom tailored for the specific size of your above ground swimming pool.

Before you install a pool liner, you may want to first install a pool pad. This is a thick pad made of polyurethane that goes underneath the liner which creates added protection from anything that may puncture the liner from the bottom of the pool.

When purchasing a liner, you’ll also want to consider the aesthetics of your liner. Today’s above ground pool liners come in a wide variety of designs and colors, and picking one that compliments the area in which you have your above ground pool can make a big difference in terms of attractiveness. Later down the road, it can be a selling point if you choose to put your home on the market.

Most importantly, when you purchase an above ground pool liner, you should make sure that you’re dealing with a reputable pool accessories dealer. Ask around, visit Internet discussion forums and don’t be afraid to ask for professional credentials. A little bit of homework on your end can save you a lot of money down the road if it prevents you from doing business with a shady dealer.
